Word Order in a Sentence
« on: September 19, 2014, 02:57:58 pm »
Hello all!

From what I understand, the word order in the High Valyrian language is SOV (Subject-Object-Verb), for example 'Sam oranges ate' instead of 'Sam ate oranges' as it would be in English.
Let's take for example 'the cat sat on the throne', the best I am able to work out as of the moment is 'Kēli dēmalion (verb, unsure of how to conjugate dēmagon)'. However I know I am leaving out words like 'the' and 'on the', however I understand that it will not be an exact translation, these words must fit into the sentence somehow.
If someone could explain this to me I really would appreciate it.
Kirimvose!

I've now managed to come out with 'Kēli dēmalion bē dēmas', but I'm still not sure, can anyone help?

High Valyrian doesn't have definiteness, or definite articles, so no need to worry about any the in the sentence. Dēmalion also needs be in the genitive case, since it modifies the adposition . If the sentence you are translating is the cat sat on the throne, the verb should be in the past tense. This gives us Kēli dēmalio bē dēmatas. I hope I explained it fairly well!

Fantastic answer, much appreciated. If you could, would you mind explaining to me what the genitive case is? I speak a couple of languages so if you use any jargon I'll most likely know it, but apparently not this one!  :P

Game of Thrones is not The Song of Ice and Fire, sweetling. You'll learn that one day to your sorrow.
