Duolingo Course Creation Tools Are Coming

This is gonna be huge for the popularity of Dothraki and Valyrian, if people make courses for them. I say that because Duolingo is by far the most popular free language learning website around. They also have a Duolingo app in multiple smartphones stores. Most users use the app actually. I let David Peterson know about the course creation tools via Twitter and he says he really likes Duolingo, so maybe he will encourage people to make courses for his languages or something.

And for those of you who have never heard of Duolingo, here you go.

Thank you, zhey Aleenik for sharing this. There has been talk about this tool on the Language Creation Socisty list, and it is certainly a good thing to have. The challenge right now, is finding someone to build the lessons. I have become too busy to do this, and I am not the most qualified instructor here.

Meanwhile, I have stickyed the series of lessons built by Sunquan8094 on the Dothraki beginners forum. His lessons are a very good place for beginners to start their learning. (Why these weren't stickyed a long time ago, I will never know!)
Don't tell Khal Drogo I am here ;)

Dothraki has now been added as an option in Duolingo. There's even a Dothraki flag.

Check it out at:

http://incubator.duolingo.com/apply

I'm sure that 2-3 of the talented Dothraki speakers on this site would be enough to build a course! I'd give a big thank you to anyone who volunteers, but as we all know, there is no word for thank you in Dothraki :)

Please reply here if you volunteer, so we know how many instructors we get!

The situation is a bit curious right now. We have a big Peterson-made online course and a book coming in autumn, so we can expect our current incomplete knowledge to become obsolete, so jumping into a massive project like Duolingo course seems to me an ill advised effort. And when the course and book do come out, there is another question: are we interested in making a competing (and free) course. I think not. There's probably still room for fan material, but keeping a respecting attitude will become more of an issue. At worst even legality might challenged. Languages are not terribly well copyrightable, but cut&pasting lessons from Peterson's work won't do and when you have one authorative learning source, doing things differently ends up easily just intentionally degradating material, which is an ugly road to take.

That being said, I will at least consult, if people get their mind on doing this thing. I'm not sure, if I'll be directly involved. I'm already doing badly enough with keeping the wiki current and developing.
