A quick translation I did.
« on: November 20, 2012, 03:11:58 pm »
I saw that this certain text had some good potential to be translated so I did a quick job of translating it. Can anyone figure out what the original text is?

Yer oshi qoy anhoon ven glen
Yer zitee ma astoe athjilari
Yer hilee yothnhare anhoon kash me nitha
Yer ray fich sajoes anni ma yer zali alikh

Enossho zidrise ershe ma osoon ma oggosoon qifoon yeri
Ma silakoon yofi yeri, mori tokiki saccheyi ataki

Zhey athdrivar she akat rhae
yer aggendi anna samva
Zhey athdrivar she akat rhae
Vo zhori zhorre vekhi ma yeroon avvos

addrivak emi, mahrazh mela, astakof, afisak
Yer Rhaeshoon Andhali disse
Hash yer ez arakh ido affazolat anna?
Hash yer hatifi anna?
Vosma yer laz zoqwi choyo anni 'dothras chek'

Nithis, Hash yer niri?
Hash yer zali nemo addrivi?
Hash os yeri davrae?
Hash me nitha ajjalani?
Hash yer nithie, nithis.

Yer astoe ven khalof
Yer firi mena disse
Majin yer vo mra zhor
Yer yalli zhokwa
Anha zasqasok kher yeroon
Jano zikha
Yer khal graddakhi
atthihas sajoes yeri zhey nesak ei
Hash vorto yeri she athlajar?

Zhey athdrivar she akat rhae
yer aggendi anna samva
Zhey athdrivar she akat rhae
Vo zhori zhorre vekhi ma yeri avvos

Yofi, kisha jif jervaki yera.
Yer gimi graddakhi rikhoe she evethiz athjahakari
Kisha jif fichaki hrazef yeri
Majin kishi somoki yera
annithis anna. Anha nithik.

When you have figured out what the text is then you can figure out the various translation choices I made.

Note that this was a very quick translation so it probably have some trivial mistakes and there are probably better ways of expressing things. I also opted to convey the sentiment of the text rather than the literal translation.

HAR! That's some text. Lenghty as hell, compared to pretty much anything we've done so far. I'm half way through, and it seems quite readable (just need to check every other word from the vocab, of course).

I had to google for original, my pop culture knowledge did not reach that far. Googled with "Vosma yer laz zoqwi choyo anni 'dothras chek'" (of all the things!) and still got the very first hit right :)

A bit surprised we still haven't added z(i)- -(s)e on the derivational morphology page. I could have sworn we had that one there.

OK. Read it through, with the original text to compare with. Fun stuff. I can recommend for everyone to try to decipher that.
I'll skip the grammar discussion for now. There's too much text to comb through and you, Ingsve, don't need my help on that anyway. Only one straight out typo I might have noticed: should atthihas be attihas? That's one of the more mystifying translations, so maybe I just don't get it.

Me darvae, jin ammemakasar fini hake Khaleesi. (or is it "[...] hake fini [...]"? ych. I guess it should not be.)

Yes it should be attihas and yes that is one of the stranger translations. It was getting really late by then and I couldn't find a good way to express that line so that is what I came up with in a hurry so that I could get some sleep before getting up for work.

No one else able to give this a shot?

I'll give it a couple more days then I'll post the original text and the translation choices I made.

So the text I've translated for those that didn't manage to identify it is the song Death on Two Legs by Queen.

You suck my blood like a leech
You break the law and you preach
Screw my brain till it hurts
You've taken all my money
And you want more
Misguided old mule with your pig headed rules
With your narrow minded cronies
Who are fools of the first division
Death on two legs
You're tearing me apart
Death on two legs
You've never had a heart of your own
Kill joy bad guy big talking small fry
You're just an old barrow boy
Have you found a new toy to replace me'
Can you face me'
But now you can kiss my ass goodbye
Feel good are you satisfied'
Do you feel like suicide'
(I think you should)
Is your conscience all right
Does it plague you at night'
Do you feel good feel good'

You talk like a big business tycoon
You're just a hot air balloon
So no one gives you a damn
You're just an overgrown schoolboy
Let me tan your hide
A dog with disease
You're the king of the 'sleaze'
Put your money where your mouth is
Mister know-all
Was the fin on your back
Part of the deal' (shark)
Death on two legs
You're tearing me apart
Death on two legs
You've never had a heart (you never did) of your own
(right from the start)
Insane you should be put inside
You're a sewer rat decaying in a cesspool of pride
Should be made unemployed
Then make yourself null and void
Make me feel good I feel good

I'll return shortly with a rundown of some of the choices I made when translating.

I forgot that I said I would go through this translation I did but here goes. The comments will follow the structure

Original lyric
Dothraki translation
literal translation of the dothraki
comments

You suck my blood like a leech
Yer oshi qoy anhoon ven glen
You suck my blood like a louse.
Not having a word for leech I though louse was close enough. Otherwise a pretty straight forward translation.

You break the law and you preach
Yer zitee ma astoe athjilari
You missdo and talk about rightness
This was a tricky one. We have nothing close to "break the law" so I created a word using the structure z(i)- -e which has the effect of the action becoming negative. So change the verb tat into zitelat which might have the meaning of "doing something bad". I think that at least gets the sentiment across. Also preaching is not a word we know so I think I got as close as I could with "talking about rightness/correctness"

Screw my brain till it hurts
Yer hilee yothnhare anhoon kash me nitha
You graddakh my brain until it hurts
I went for a literal translation here eventhough the expression in English carries it's own idiomatic meaning.

You've taken all my money and you want more
Yer ray fich sajoes anni ma yer zali alikh
You've taken my mounts and you want more
The Dothraki don't have money but I reckon taking someones horse is fairly equal to taking someones money or worse perhaps.

Misguided old mule with your pig headed rules
Enossho zidrise ershe ma osoon ma oggosoon qifoon yeri
"Misguided" old mule with you pigheaded way/path.
Again I used the formation rule that makes an action negative and applied it to guiding. I guess that could in a sense mean "misguide". Other than that I again went for a literal translation rather than trying to find a suitable metaphor in Dothraki.

With your narrow minded cronies who are fools of the first division
Ma silakoon yofi yeri, mori tokiki saccheyi ataki
With your crazy followers, they are fools of the first category.

Death on two legs
Zhey athdrivar she akat rhae
death on two legs
I think it's fitting to use the vocative here since it's really a direct address.

You're tearing me apart
yer aggendi anna samva
You're ripping me broken
I think samva is probably a pretty good translation for "apart". I have a sense that it means broken in the sense of broken in pieces rather than broken in the sense of not functioning.

You've never had a heart of your own
Vo zhori zhorre vekhi ma yeroon avvos
No own heart is ever with you.
Pretty straight forward given the ways we have of expressing ourselves in Dothraki at the moment at least.

Well, that is a start at least. I'll continue later some time.
