News:

The Dothraki and Valyrian forums has been receiving an unprecedented level of spam as of late. I am doing my best to stay on top of it (in my experience, these go away in time). If you catch a suspicious post that I missed, mark it as spam, or PM me about it - Hrakkar

Announcements / Problems with the wiki
November 29, 2018, 01:08:00 PM
Some of you may have noticed that the wiki has suddenly become very slow responding. The reason for this problem is still unknown, and the good folks at LearnNavi have been looking into it as well. We have come to the conclusion that there is some sort of low-level problem with the wiki that is best fixed with a software update. Sometime over the weekend of December 1st/2nd, I am going to try and upgrade the wiki. This may be simple; it may be very complicated. Stay tuned for future information about this upgrade. Also feel free to ask questions here, or PM me.

David Peterson, along with Britton Watkins and Josh Feldman are giving a panel on Sunday, March 20th, 11 AM, at the Silicon Valley ComiCon. The panel, entitled "The Art of Creating Languages for Sci-fi and Fantasy" will feature some footage from the upcoming new film 'Conlanging'. This film features Jason Momoa!

I am trying to make arrangements to attend, but am not sure yet if I will be able to make it.

Announcements / Another language study
February 11, 2016, 01:24:00 AM
If you are interested, here is another study survey being done on constructed languages. Although you could answer for Dothraki or Valyrian, you can also answer for your own constructed language, if any. Be forewarned though: A modest amount of linguistic terminology is used in the survey. If you are good at either Dothraki or any Valyrian language, you shouldn't have any trouble with it.

Meridian Victoria Peterson came into the world on December 4th, 2015!  9 pounds, 3 ounces (4.18 kg), length 19.5 inches (49.53 cm) The baby was born Cesearian section shortly after noon. C-section was chosen, not because of any issues, but as David put it, "The baby was too healthy. It was huge!". Mam, Dad and Baby are all doing well! http://www.whosay.com/status/davidjpeterson/1169757?wsref=fb&code=FzHbivk

July 15, 2015, 01:37:16 PM
There was an outage of the Tongues of Ice and Fire site caused by an expired domain name. Thanks to some fast work on the part of site sponsors. Learnnavi.org, (and specifically Marki, A.K.A. Toruk Makto) the expiration was quickly identified and fixed, and the site restored!

Beginners / Conversations in Valyrian
May 17, 2015, 11:01:20 PM
This is a thread to converse in Valyrian!

Since there are several dialects of Valyrian in use/being developed, but High Valyrian is the predominant dialect, please note at the beginning of your post what dialect you are using, if it isn't High Valyrian. If could be as simple as, say AV for Astapori Valyrian.

Use curly braces {  } to denote untranslatable words.

Optional, but strongly encouraged: Please provide an English (or other language) translation of what you wrote. As there is no desc or spoiler BBcode tag available on this board (I am looking into the reason why), you will have to put the English text a few lines below the Valyrian text.

Let the conversation begin!

Many of you know that Dothraki and Valyrian language creator David Peterson was working on a book on language creation. Well, the book is now available for pre-order. Follow the link below for more information. And if you help spread the word about the book, you might get your name used to coin a word in one of David's TV/film conlangs! (David loves to coin words from people's names.)

Announcements / 'Wired' podcast on Klingon and Dothraki
October 05, 2014, 09:59:37 PM
Here's a long (90 minutes), but very interesting podcast by noted Klingonist and founder of the Klingon Language Institute, Lawrence M. Schoen, and our very own David Peterson. Much ground is covered on the backgrounds of both languages. Dothraki.org gets a nice shout-out as well!

Today is a big day for conlamgers to celebrate! The word 'conlang' has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary, the definitive dictionary of the English language. Even better, in the blog entry announcing the new word, the Dothraki language gets a shout-out!

And here is the actual entry (you have to be subscribed to the OED to read the full entry):

Thanks goes to David Peterson, who brought this to my attention through a post to the Language Creation Society list.

Announcements / Dothraki language book announced!
June 05, 2014, 12:59:27 PM
On June 2nd, David Peterson made a big announcement: A Dothraki language learning book/CD will soon be available. In addition to the book and CD, there will also be an online component, as well as an IOS app (I've asked David about an Android app as well). This is being published as part of the Living Language series of books. You can learn more about it from David him self here:

http://www.dothraki.com/2014/06/chafka-jada/

You can preorder the book, the online portion, and the IOS app here:

http://livinglanguage.com/dothraki

I hope everyone here is excited about this as I am. I suspect that this will be useful to both beginners and experienced Dothraki speakers alike!

May 05, 2014, 12:58:29 AM
To all users of this site.
A systemwide outage of all the Dothraki and Valyrian services here will be occurring on Tuesday, May 6th. Here are details from Marki of the LearnNavi side of this server:

Quote
To all members:
Please note that the main LearnNavi server will be unavailable from 10:00am (US Central Daylight Time) on Tuesday, May 6th until 10:00am CDT on Wednesday,  May 7th. This planned downtime is for a complete system backup in preparation for the hard drive array upgrade as well as the actual upgrade itself.  ALL web services will be unavailable during this time, as well as the IRC server.

Other sites that will also be unavailable include dothraki.org and others.

Markì (Toruk Makto)

So be prepared!

Announcements / Changes to firewall rules
August 19, 2013, 12:44:24 PM
As many of you know, the Dothraki/Valyrian website, wiki, forums and dictionary are graciously hosted for us by Learnnavi.org on their server. Due to incessant problems with Chinese web crawlers (that Marki discussed with me during AvatarMeet), the firewall protecting this server had to be altered to reject inquiries from these web crawlers. Although unlikely, this could affect some legitimate Chinese users of this site. I will quote Learnnavi system administrator Marki here, who provides some more background on this, and what to do if a Chinese user does inadvertently get locked out:

QuoteUnfortunately owing to the total inability of the Chinese censorship webcrawlers (aka the "great firewall of China) to follow the robot rules set on the LearnNavi.org domain and their incessant slamming of our resources, I have had to add a deny filter for the IP range of 123.151.148.0/22. There is a distinct possibility that this may deny access to some of our Chinese tsmuk, although I am hoping this IP prefix is just for the crawlers.  If anyone hears of any LN soaia that have been denied, please let me know at [email protected] so I can add some specific allows for them.

Thanks!

Markì
