Beginners / Re: Legendary

I had read something about the derivation from 'dis' even though I didn't specify that. Yeah, it works even worse than I thought.

I was thinking of the specialized sense of "Legendary" used in Magic The Gathering, meaning a card you can have only one of in play at a time. Yeah, that messed this up even further. :P

Hakeso/famous works.

Beginners / Words for genitals?
« on: March 16, 2014, 01:26:55 pm »
Sorry if this is too salacious, but Dothraki doesn't seem to have a word for genitals overall, or particular parts (whether medical terms or common slang)

[Chiorisi/mahrazhi] athhilezar saccheya, literally [woman’s/man’s] sex part(s)?

That was the best I could come up with, besides translating various slang terms literally.

This line from S1E8 comes to mind but doesn't seem to answer my question.
Drogo: Anha acharak vos ale. Zhey Mago, anha acharak vos ale. Ezas eshna gech ahilee. I will hear no more. Mago, find somewhere else to stick your cock.

I will hear no more, repeated to Mago for emphasis, seems to be translated fairly literally, but I'm confused by the last sentence. [You find] [another] [?] [future 2nd person 'to hit it']. I can't find 'gech' or a word it could be derived from anyway. Could it be a typo for 'gache', 'place'? That seems to fit the sentence.

I'm trying to translate "legendary". I can't find anything for synonyms like "unique" or "alone".
I did find "only" (disse) but that seems to mean "only" in a diminutive or dismissive sense. Nevertheless, disse is all I can find, so I'm going with it.
I figure "only one" might better convey my meaning. Can I simply say disseat?

Introductions / Re: Fanfic writer wants his Dothraki quotes accurate

I also have a Hunger Games crossover that includes Daenerys, Rhaego, Doreah, Irri and Jhiqui ending up in Panem.
I haven't yet used the Dothraki language in that, but this experience inspired me to eventually, both as encryption (like code talkers) and as part of teaching Rhaego about his father’s culture.

My other stories are entirely non-ASOIAF.

Sounds like an excellent look at the cultural context.

I may wake up a little late...
I remember a discussion about thank you. Wasn't it San athchomari yeraan?

"Much respect to you"? I suppose that would be one way to put it.

Well, the problem with that is that "woman warrior" is a concept that is certainly foreign to the Dothraki altogether. I don't think they would allow their women to be warriors anyways.

Funny you should say it like that, since in a foreign society the Dothraki may well encounter that concept.

I have a fanfic which includes Daenerys heading straight to Westeros. That includes the khalasar encountering Asha/Yara, Arya, Maege, Dacey and Brienne. Asha/Yara could further be referred to as lajakeesi eveth. Qvaak seemed to accept lajak eveth for military sailor in my words thread.

More use of -eesi could also be useful to expand the language for out-of-character uses.

Yeah, dropping the anha is one of my usual mistakes

Since horses in general can't drink it, that is the phrasing I was going for.

Is 'mea' a typo for mae?

Yeah, hash and kash are good connecting words to know.

I don't mean to directly mirror the phrasing of the quote I got the idea from.

yay, my main issues seem to be simple typos.
 :)
yeah, horsemeat seems like one of those things that Dothraki should have a word for.

also, did you see that phrase I added by edit a few minutes before your post?

Khali Rhaeshi Andalhi mahrazhkem atakaki anni – His Grace is my second husband

As you can see, I've decided to use the King Of Land Of Andals construct for the Westerosi royal style/title.

'anni' for 'my' seems to go at the end of sample phrases I've seen, so I've replicated that here. Adding -ak to atak (2) to make atakak (2nd), with a further -i ending and put after the noun it's modifying seems obvious, but did I put 'marazhkem atakaki' at the right part in the sentence?

I could say 'Drogo was my first husband' in a similar manner (Drogo mahrazhkemoon ataki anni?), but how would you say a shortened version that would be understandable in the context of the first phrase?

Khaleesi ezzoe ifakes – The queen is teaching the foreigners

Vo hrazef laz indee mae, zalok verat mae – A horse can’t drink it, I don’t want to travel it (homage to “if a horse won’t eat it, I don’t want to play on it”, baseball star Dick Allen’s negative opinion of artificial turf.)

lajak eveth (water warrior) - sailor (military)
jerak eveth (water trader) - sailor (civilian)

both based on rhaggat eveth (water cart) for ship

shiqethiyol - ironborn

-of seems to be a greatness ending, as in vezh (stallion) to Vezhof (Great Stallion). yeah, that improves the word for castle.

thinking of castle as the object of commander is where I got the idea to use accusative case. genitive on castle as in castle's commander makes sense. since okrenegwinof ends in a consonant, that would just add an -i, right?

To use them in a sentence:
Ma Balon m’ Aggo assolakea okrenegwinofi – Balon and Aggo will be castellans
Ma Balon m’ Aggo assolakea okri – Balon and Aggo will be camp commanders

Dothraki Language Updates / Re: The Dictionary Thread
« on: January 13, 2014, 08:35:07 am »
Zhey KingAlani, thanks for pointing these items out.

The 'seize' error is probably mine, as that is one I commonly make.

The bit about a ko commanding a khas probably predates my time as dictionary editor. If it is in the wiki that way, that is almost certainly the case. Both of these are fixable as well, but I just need to verify that this is indeed correct.

I was planning a dictionary update this weekend, but I got busy with my other responsibilities. I'll try and get to that tomorrow night.

Athdavrazar!

Hadaen Ma Zhif - Food And Salt
I can't find any word for bread or something related (grain, types of grain, flour, et cetera) so I felt the need to go more general.

Horseflesh might be a good idiomatic/culturally specific translation as a fundamental food item instead of bread, is there any specific word for that compared to hrazefi gavat (horse's meat)?
