Yes, of course it should be the causative. My bad for not noticing that. And good that we already had something suitable. I knew there had to be some type of idiom used and there we have it.

You started out good but then went off course. Ohharat is another verb so it doesn't fit to just tag it on like that at the end. With those verbs it would be better to just use either one. Either "We will burn the city" or "We will tear the city down". To literally say "burn something to the ground" it would probably need some new verb or some specific construction. One crude translation might be Kisha virsaki vaes sorfaan. "We will burn the city to the ground (dirt)" but I think that translation would be too literal. I would prefer something a little more idiomatic. Better would probably be Kisha virsaki vaes ikhaan. "We will burn to city to ashes".

I agree that one Valyrian wiki is enough.

I think that if there is a combined frontpage for all languages then the domains dothraki.org and valyrian.org (my preferred choice) should point to the combined front page rather than just the specific subsection for the language in question.

That would be something like

San mahrazhi adrivoe vosma kisha vo mahrazhi.

Many men will die but we are not men.

That should be pretty much an exact translation.

Yes, that is correct.

As for a tutor I suggest you check out sunquan8094's youtube tutorial which goes trough all of the basics in a systematic way.

Make sure to check the AMA that David did on Reddit this week as well. There were some High Valyrian words given there. For example Dothraki now has a word for book that is borrow from Valyrian.

Wouldn't the best solution be to change the current dothraki.org site into a combined "languages of game of thrones site" with just changing the headings of the wiki and the forum and creating separate sections for the various languages in the wiki and forum? Then we just create a valyrian.org adress that redirects to the same place as dothraki.org.

Yes and no. I think your basic idea is on the right track, but you wouldn't want to change Dothraki.org. Too many things point to it, that are involved with Dothraki. Either an all new, multi lingual site is needed, with links to it here, or this site becomes that, but retains the Dothraki.org name. It is possible to have more than one domain name point to a site, or to points within the site. Separate wikis, I think, will be required.

I see there is enough information on alphabet and phonology that it might be possible to get a dictionary going.

I wasn't suggesting changing the dothraki.org URL. Just to add another URL called valyrian.org or something that points to the same place as dothraki.org

rhae mhar        n.         sore-foot    not completly sure of the meaning...
That's an iffy phrase from early days of Dothraki. It's hard to tell, what to make of it. It looks idiomatic or something, as it's used in slightly odd way in "khal rhae mhar" - no preposition, no visible case marking. Maybe it's a noun type expression like bigfoot, maybe it's adjectival like in the translation. I'd just drop it off. It's not a word anyway.

That's actually straight from the book so the reason it seems strange is because it was GRRM who coined it. Since you need someone who read the book in french you can ask them about this word as well.

David can't make the chat next week either since he's going to a Defiance premiere.

I believe that current it's Seabass from Learn Na'vi that is hosting and paying for dothraki.org. I'm not really sure how things like this work and what it would take to register and get a new site up and running. I know David has said that we could move Dothraki.org to LCS if we want bur right now having it on the Learn Navi server seems to work.

I think Hrakkar knows more about this stuff.

We think it's just an irregularity but there is probably some historical reason for it. I don't think we've gotten an explanation for why it does that and so far I it's the only verb that works that way.

Well, I don't think that's an "irregularity" in the linguistic sense. You can think of verbs that use prepositions, for example, "look", you say "Let me have a look at you", you don't say "Let me look you". That's not an irregularity, that's just how the verb works. You even have "expect" as in "I expect something of you" or better "I expect of you to handle this is a responsible manner" and so on. This is the same thing, inflectional languages sometimes do that with lots of verbs and some even change meaning when different cases are used (think about "think of" and "think for").

Ya, irregularity is perhaps not the best word. What I mean is that it doesn't seem like a general construction that can be applied to many verbs to express a certain meaning but rather it seems like a quirk perticular to this specific verb.

Seems like someone has already done a full Dothraki memrise course

http://www.memrise.com/course/81961/dothraki-words/

http://www.memrise.com/course/81964/dothraki-words-by-part-of-speech/

Yeah, that'd be me and my brother. If you notice any errors, please send me a pm!  :)

Ya, I saw that you had contributed but I didn't recognize the other screenname.

I'm through the first 100 words and no mistakes yet that I have found. There might be some confusion with words like mra which first appears as "out of" while it might be better known as "within". It depends on how well people know about the case assignment to notice the difference.

Nice to see you again by the way. You should stop by the chat and say hello to David some time. Though it's in the middle of the night for you as it is for me. The chats are on tuesday mornings at 4am CET. Though I'm not sure David was gonna make it this coming chat since he is at a convention in Seattle currently.
