Beginners / Re: Pronounciation help
« on: August 08, 2016, 02:16:30 pm »
Zhey Enth,
The gold standard, of course, is how David Peterson pronounces it. When he speaks Dothraki, the whole demeanor of his voice changes, and becomes somewhat middle eastern. If you can get him to pronounce it for you, that would be the best.
In general though, there is a modest amount of wiggle room in how things get pronounced, and no two people who have not spent much time talking Dothraki to each other are going to pronounce it exactly the same. Your best bet is to look on the wiki, where there is a section on sounds and pronunciation. The really important things are:

1. Pay attention to syllable boundaries. In particular, note that doubled vowels are two syllables, one part of the preceeding/following syllable and the next standing by itself. An interesting example though, to point out what I mentioned above is the very common word 'khaleesi'. The canonical way of pronouncing it is kha-le-e-si (Note that syllabification rules follow the 'maximal onset' principle). However, it is almost always pronounced kha-lee-si, with the /ee/ sound being long.
2. Stress is very simple: Words that end on a consonant have the stress on the first syllable. Words that end on a vowel have their stress on the final syllable, unless the syllable before is 'heavy'. The stress will then be on that heavy syllable. An exammple of this is 'Tolorro'.
3. R's are trilled if they occur as the first letter of a word with a vowel following, or the last letter, or if doubled. It took me a long time to get this to sound right.
4. The letters D, N, L and T are pronounced with the tongue briefly touching the teeth. This, more than anything else, creates the characteristic Dothraki sound. It is also challenging to learn to do (at least for me).

Here is a link to the phonotactic part of the wiki: http://wiki.dothraki.org/Phonotactics
Here is a link to the phonology part of the wiki: http://wiki.dothraki.org/Phonology

Of course, if you can pick up David's book on learning Dothraki (or the online course), the CD included will help you a lot! The book and online course compliment each other and are best used together.

Enjoy!

General Discussion / Re: My personal Dothraki script

And there are a bunch of words I need to add to the dictionary. I've been tied up with three big projects this summer that have left me precious little time to work on it. Plus, we almost never have 'rainy days' here ;)

That's very interesting, and has, if anything, a rather distinctive look. I think I have seen this script before. Is it used for other purposes today? How ancient is it? Some of the symbols look like they may be borrowed from fairly modern languages.

Lastly, do you have Unicode code points for these letters?

I wish I had more time (and skill!) to be your coach/partner. Although I have had a lot to do with Dothraki over the years, there is still much to learn!

Beginners / Re: Some questions...
« on: August 01, 2016, 01:47:27 pm »
I started learning Dothraki(yesterday) and  I have some questions:
  • On  wiki I found examples for negative form of present tense. But I also found "vos" statements..Is it like this:
Anhra dothrok.   or Anhra vos dothrak? or maybe Anhra vo(s) dothrok ?
  • Also  I found that if next word starts with non-vowel (constontant I mean) you use vo insted of vos.
  • What vowels are in Dothraki language? (in serbian,vowels are  A E I O U )

  • Is this correct sentances:
    Anhra dothrak,vosma yer dothrae, kifindirgi?
(I ride, but you do not, why?)

Zhey Iqbal, welcome to the forums. Kind of quiet here right now, and other misadventures in life have been keeping me away from a lot of online activities.

But basically, I think you are misunderstanding some of the stuff in the wiki.

First of all, where are you getting anhra? The word for 'I' is anha.
Second, I do not believe there is any place in the Dothraki language where a word ending changes because of the following word. You may be confusing this with some prefixes and suffixes, which change based on the first or last letter(s) of the word. Most tense markers for verbs do this, as well as noun case markers. The prefix for future tense also does this.
Third, you understand correctly that the negative grade of a verb is part of the overall conjugation of the verb. The verb agrees with the negative sense of the sentence. Thus vos dothrok is correct.
Fourth,  you need to use the second person tense marker on the verb that refers to the other person. In this usage, the noun stay in the nominative case.
Fifth, I think your sentence has the pronouns flipped. Thus: Anha dothrak, vosma yer vos dothrok, kifindirgi?

For your vowel question, the Dothraki vowels are A, E I, and O.

I hope this helps!

Sorry I haven't replied sooner, but welcome, Mother-of-Ferrets!

We are here to help. Don't hesitate to ask questions, although it does tend to be rather quiet here.

Dothraki Language Updates / Re: Hold up, one f*cking second!

A pika is a small mammal, a rodent, I believe.

David has introduced quite a few different animals, and foods, into the Dothraki language.

Not a completely crazy idea. There is an opera in Klingon, that has been regularly performed, at least in Europe.

Zhey Choyosor,
Good job stepping in and analyzing this question! Things are kind of slow right now, but it is always good to see folks who know the language stepping in and helping out!

Not bad for a first try!
I'll need to look a little closer at this when there is more time. The biggest thing needed might be a little tweaking on noun cases.

The lack of a word for 'worchip' is interesting and kind of unexpected, considering how often the concept is actually used. But I don't remember seeing one, either. I might just ask David Peterson about that.

I'm afraid I can't help you with your Valyrian questions. Because activity has dropped so low here, I don't think they check very frequently.

David Peterson, along with Britton Watkins and Josh Feldman are giving a panel on Sunday, March 20th, 11 AM, at the Silicon Valley ComiCon. The panel, entitled "The Art of Creating Languages for Sci-fi and Fantasy" will feature some footage from the upcoming new film 'Conlanging'. This film features Jason Momoa!

I am trying to make arrangements to attend, but am not sure yet if I will be able to make it.

Announcements / Another language study
« on: February 11, 2016, 01:24:00 am »
If you are interested, here is another study survey being done on constructed languages. Although you could answer for Dothraki or Valyrian, you can also answer for your own constructed language, if any. Be forewarned though: A modest amount of linguistic terminology is used in the survey. If you are good at either Dothraki or any Valyrian language, you shouldn't have any trouble with it.
