In the Idiom section, in the wiki, shoud be added "adoroon shiqethi" (iron chair) for "throne" and "rhaggat eveth" (water cart) for "ship" ?

Yes, it's from one of the dialogues, but I was in hurry and I didn't think about remove the ablative XD

Quote
Kash qoy qoyi thira disse was a phrase that the producers lifted from when Qotho says it and gave it to some random people, probably because they thought it sounded cool.

Uh. Ok, in this way it makes sense :D
I was unable to understand the meaning of saying that in the other situations.
In my opinion to give a meaning to others uses of the phrase would be interesting, because.. regardless of the fact that it has been a free initiative of the producers...it has been said in other moments, without the original meaning.
Like "dozgosor".

I guess we could have David give it a meaning as a backformation though.
If David likes the idea, why not  ;D

Example: Hrazef vezh. "The horse is a stallion" (literally "horse steed")
Example: Hrazef vezhoon. "The horse was a stallion" (literally "horse from steed")
Example: Hrazef vezhaan. "The horse will be a stallion" (literally "horse towards steed")

I was wondering if it would be better to change "steed" with "stallion", in the syntax page, given that "steed" is "sajo" and not "vezh" that is literally, in fact, the stallion as "male horse".
It's a very little thing, but I think it would be more precise, unless I'm missing something about meanings <.<

If it's ok, I'll correct :D

Last thing, I swear :P

Reading the dialogues, I noticed that "Kash qoy qoyi thira disse" is said in various moments. Could it be a sort of idiomatic phrase to say something beyond the literal meaning?
Qotho said it while talking with Jorah about the future death of Drogo and it would be quite literal I think..but the "random dothraki" in episode 3, said it to the slave he was whipping, and Rakharo said it to Mago while trying to stop him from abusing the Lazhareen women, as asked by Dany.
Could be a sort of "I can do this until my Khal lives" as "I've the power to do this and you have to shut up/to do what I say you have to do"?  :o

Sooner or later we will have all the dialogues updated and corrected!  8)
Btw, you've done a really GREAT work!
I think dialogues, after the chance to talk directly with David, are the most important thing to understand and improve syntax and grammar, so thank you for the devotion to duty  ;D

I snooped around after this post and I found the discussion about the transitive/intransitive verb. I've had this doubt before, but I have been unable to find where it was written, so I've asked anyway.
There are a lot of things around and I get lost easy XD

Btw thank you for the answer.

For "athmithrat/ammithrat" probably you're right, but I'm quite sure they don't say "Amm-" because I've seen some tongue between the teeth. But it could be simply a mispronunciation, like many other things :/ Or maybe I've heard something wrong myself.

For "anat", there must be a mistake in the dictionnary. I open every time that linked in the wiki, version 2.06 and under Ammithrar there is "anat", with "to rest" in the same way  :o

For razik ok. I thought that was a "more sure" term.
But I think in the show it's used also another word that is not "hrezef".

English is not my native language, so learning a third language through a second language is quite a challenge, but eventually i'm sure i'll get the hang of it.

I'm in the same situation, and not only me :D
It's quite a challenge but..nothing's impossibile!  8)

Heh, thanks for understanding ValekLost, i have asked newbie questions before in other forums, where one would just be shot down for being, well, a newbie, so it's a really warm feeling to be welcomed as much as i have already, and been taken seriously as well.

I believe this is the best way to discourage a community to grow.
Everyone has learned, no one is born with the knowledge. So..why shot down who's trying to learn like they have done before?  :o

I think I can say we're not that kind of community, so, feel free to try and to make mistakes ;P

Beginners / To rest / horse
« on: June 19, 2011, 04:58:07 am »
Ok, I'm a little bit confused about "to rest".
On the dictonnary I found:

Athmithrar: ni. rest

Ammithrat: to rest - here there could be a mistake and instead of "ammithrat" is "athmithrat" (in the episode I quite sure to have hear an "ath" rather than an "amm-" but I could be totally wrong)? In this way "athmithrar" would be the noun and "athmithrat" the verb.
BTW I think this verb has the most literal meaning of "to rest"

Vimitherat: to rest - used by Qotho with Dany, should mean "to camp, to rest in a place for a certain time"

Anat: to rest - ?? I'm unable to understand the gradient of meaning.

Same doubt for "horse"

Sajo: na. steed (the "animal you ride", I think)
Hrezef: na - horse (the animal as such?)
Razik: ?? - ??

Thank you in advance u.u

Hi Ruben!
Don't worry. Here we are all learners, and neither we run to win the title of "the best", nor this forum it's a class and everyone who make a mistake, gain a bad mark and a lot of homework to do at home :P
Trying and compare ourselves with others, I think is the best way both to understand and learn :D

I was wondering about the use of "zhey", just a couple of days ago, while listening to the dialogues in the episodes.
And it's not cleart to me too.

In ep 9 for exemple, Qotho speaks often to Daenerys, but "zhey" is rarely said (or at least, I think it is so. Maybe I didn't understand well).
On the other hand, he says it to Mirri Maz Duur when they're inside the tent. "yer jin, zhey maegi" (You did this, witch.)

I thought it could be a sort of "insult" to Dany because of she's a stranger, or something linked to this, but "zhey" is simply related to the vocative, it's not a sort of courtesy form, also because I don't think he would have said "zhey" to the maegi and not to his queen :P

So, I still not understand how "zhey" works :(

Sorry if I reply to you only today, but I havn't seen yours until now.

Yep, I am.
I've litterally fallen in love with the Dothraki language, and I'm famous among my friens to totally dive into things when I'm fascinating by something.
It's difficult for me to have half-ways :D

So..here I am.

I'm really happy to be here. And I'm happy to have found many people wishing to learn and improve Dothraki.

So, when you want to talk about this, or whatever else...I'm here :D

I'm not sure if the Dothraki would even use a term like that to refer to a son or daughter.

I'm not sure too, though I was using it in a more literal way than the "blood of my blood" that we usually use in our world, like "I've my blood and then my son/daughter has my blood too" in the simplest way.
Btw, maybe it's more correct to use rizh and nothing more, but I don't know if there is a female corrispective.

Today (06/15) there is a total ecplise of moon, visibile from Europe and also Italy.
I was wondering if there is a way to say it in Dothraki  ;D
It would be nice to nerding around.

I try with:
shekhqoyi > total ecplise of sun > jalanqoyi > total ecplise of moon (?) they're a similar phenomena and sometimes the moon, during the eclipse phases has a bloodish-reddish colour <,<

So..

"Today there will be a total eclipse of moon"
could be
Asshekh avekha jalankqoyi?

I took "vekha" from
Quote
-Drogo: Nevakhi vekha ha maan. There is a place for you.

somthing like "it's present .." given that the dictionnary says: -vekhat - to be present.
But I'm not so sure neither about "vekha", nor about "avekha" as tense to use in this context. Better the present tense?

So, firstly thank you for help and corrections :P

For "qoy qoyi" I've totally forgotten about the "title", and I took it as a general idiom.  :P
So, "qoy qoyi" is only for the title, while if it means "son/daughter" it needs also the genitive pronoun.

Ok.

Next..I've a doubt about the future tense, negative.
In the wiki, there is:
Quote
In the negative grade the future tense is changed from /a-/ to /o-/. So the sentence "I will not ride" would be Anha vos odothrok.

So that's is ONLY for verbs that starts with a consonant, like it's writen.
I don't know why, but I've extendend the rule also for those which starts with a vowel. ???

First attempt to translate something starting from zero.
I try also, with this couple of sentences to clarify some doubt I've.

Version 1 - simple negation

This is the blood of my blood and for this (reason) it's Dothraki blood.
The Lands of Andals won't drinkt it.

Jin qoy qoyi, majin Dothraki qoyi.
Rhaeshi (plur) Andahli oindeo/ondeo (see below) mae.

Version 2 - Emphatic negation

This is the blood of my blood and for this (reason) it's Dothraki blood.
The Lands of Andals will never drink it.

Jin qoy qoyi, majin Dothraki qoyi.
Rhaeshi (plur) Andahli, oindeo/ondeo (see below) vosecchi mae.

Doubt:

to drink > indelat
present: inde- ...? the form for presente is -e ..so it become "indee"? "inde"? Or is there some epenthesis I missed?
future negative: I was wondering about "oindeo" but I found in a part of script "vos ondeo" (present negative of "ondelat" - to wear)...so..can I assume that the future negative of indelat and the present negative of ondelat could match in the written form and so it is "ondeo" and not "oindeo" for help the pronunciation?

Sorry in case I've done some basic mistakes or I've written some non-sense, but I slept only 2-3 hours and my mind it's not so present <,<

General Discussion / Re: Chat Thread!

Hi :D

I've noticed this post only now.
I'm not a conlanger or a conlang geek, but I'm very fascinating by foreign languages, and at school I've been studied for years English, French, German and a little bit of Spanish. And this, at the end, involves conglang too, because I easily become a big-big-fan-of-something, and I throw myself into that world.

My biggest problem btw it's the lack of will for "academic studies", so I've learned good only English and a bit of French (though now it's quite rusty, because I listen to it often but I write/speak it a lot less, so I hope to take off some dust to it with you on this forum :D..and any correction/criticism is welcomed, given that also my English Grammar is not so clean at the moment) hating studying for all the rest.

And for this, out of the school I read a lot of things I would have NEVER read inside a college/university/seminar/private course XD and as I didn't study so much the languages I had to for school or learned other languages in general..as I learned Sindarin from LoTR, also if I haven't been read nothing about it for years, so at the momento I don't remember too much.
I'll fix that after learning Dothraki :P

It's a pity I cannot write in my curriculum "known languages: English, French, Sindarin and Dothraki", but really I'm NOT able to study something useful and "real" in this way <.<"
Ok. I'm definitely insane.

Last thing, I'm Italian guy and nice to meet you all :D

I've corrected this part in the Wiki, about verb conjugation:

Quote
For verbs that begin with a vowel the prefix /a-/ is added and for verbs that begin with a vowel the prefix is instead /v-/.
